One more comparison among tennis tournaments – the ones I’ve experienced, which are the W&S here, the Rogers Cup in Toronto, and the U S Open.
The US Open’s food court, and food in general, is the best. The food court features lots of old time New York stuff – hot dogs, a Jewish deli, various ethnic offerings, health food, smoothies – in an old row of restaurant spaces at the event. Very New York. Then around the grounds are various other booths for drinks, ice cream, snacks, etc.
Plus 2 large very nice sit down restaurants, open to the public, which are very nice during a long day or week at a tournament. Sometimes a leisurely meal while sitting down in a quieter space can be quite the blessing.
The food court at the W & S has always been pretty good. This year it was completely re-done and is now totally terrific. A semi-circle of great choices, with lots of ability to stand in the shade while ordering and waiting. Then lots of tables inside the semi-circle, with small trees interspersed – so in a few years, there will be lots more shade. Very smart. I would just ask for Indian and Thai dishes to be added to the menu. But it compares very favorably with the Open.
At the Rogers Cup, though – food seems like an afterthought. There are two big restaurant-y spaces – lots of umbrella tables and space. There was only one vegan sandwich offered in the whole space, and it was mostly bread. One day I ended up having french fries for lunch, since I didn’t want to keep eating that same sandwich. I also found, tucked away, a great smoothy place that used soy and not just fruit.
The day was saved though, because the Lindt chocolate place was making chocolates and handing them out. When my body can’t find protein, it will, for a while at least, settle for chocolate. I got in that line way more than once!
